Customer Understanding

If Your Website Can't Explain What You Do in 5 Seconds, You're Losing Customers

A visitor doesn't read your website. They scan it, decide if it's relevant, and either stay or leave, usually before they've scrolled once.

Clarity beats cleverness, every time

A lot of small business sites try to sound impressive before they say what the business actually does. The result is a homepage full of confident-sounding language that doesn't answer the one question every visitor actually has: what is this, and is it what I'm looking for? Say what you do, who it's for, and how to get it, plainly, immediately, before anything else.

The three things a visitor needs answered fast

If those three things aren't obvious within a few seconds of landing on the page, most visitors won't dig for them. They'll just leave and try the next search result.

Understanding your customer is a website decision, not just a marketing one

The businesses that get this right usually didn't hire a copywriter. They just wrote the way they'd explain it to a neighbor. What do you actually do, who's it for, and how do people usually reach you? That's the whole exercise. Everything else on the page should support those three answers, not compete with them.
